
Situation
Nottingham City Transport (NCT) runs 300 buses in the city and its surrounding areas, with a sizeable amount of data being produced every day. One million passenger transactions occur each week, creating 20 million data points; all held in a database and reported through Crystal reports and spreadsheets. NCT knew which buses were running where and when, but other data couldn’t easily be interpreted or perform as they wanted. In the last few years, access to the data and drafting reports became slower. As a result, NCT needed an analytics solution with instant and visualised data to help performance and planning.
Solution
NCT partnered with Data Technology, who provided illustrations of how Qlik Analytics could help them adapt and become more agile by using visualisations and automated reporting. Three years’ worth of data was immediately imported from source into Qlik dashboards, with comparisons at the touch of a button.

Success
The service planning team now has detailed insight into peaks of service, which then builds weekly reports on performance, averages and so on. This feeds into marketing, helping create incentives and campaigns using the new information they’ve received. Data Technology assist as needed, and add further value to the platform - particularly regarding NCT’s mobile app and contactless transactions.
